179 places and ideas for things to do

The Salute travel guide to Helsinki will help you explore the unique local aesthetics of the city, from restaurants, cafes, and bars to creative spaces, museums, and theaters, as well as from urban parks to countryside hiking. This is not a rating of the "best of the best," and we do not claim to cover everything. Here you will find recommendations from local residents and expats working in urban journalism, the creative industry, and the club and bar scene. Our selection is based on the ideology of our project: more small businesses and original projects, less corporate giants and commercialization.

Top places in Helsinki
Kaffa roastery
Not all locals approve of Kaffa, saying that the coffee shop has lost its charm, but that’s not entirely true. Although frequent mentions in lists have indeed attracted crowds, the coffee here is still good, made from quality beans, and there's a wide selection. Plus, they always have raw chocolate with coconut or salted caramel flavor - a real hit.
Rikhardinkatu Library
Rikhardinkatu is one of the oldest libraries in Helsinki and served as the city's main public library until 1986. Designed by architect Theodor Höijer in 1881, it became the first public library building in Northern Europe.
Hakaniementori Market
Hakaniementori or Hakaniemen Tori is a genuine alternative to the well-known market square Kauppatori, which locals tend to avoid. Instead of squeezing through noisy crowds of tourists, they prefer the more spacious and relaxed Hakaniemen tori. And we understand why: there are fewer bold seagulls here, yet you can still enjoy the same fish soup and coffee with a pastry.
